Shanghai Mental Health Center (SMHC)

The Shanghai Mental Health Center (SMHC), formerly known as the Shanghai Psychiatric Hospital, was founded in 1958. Its predecessor, Mercy Hospital, was established in 1935. The SMHC is consist of a main hospital(in Xuhui district) and a branch hospital (in Minhang district).

SMHC has numerous functions. In addition to serving as a mental health clinic offering medication management and psychotherapy, the center is involved in teaching, research, and mental health prevention planning for Shanghai and the entirety of China. There are multiple divisions within the SMHC, each of which have some responsibility for the above functions of the SMHC. The divisions of the SMHC are as follows: The Shanghai Institute of Mental Health (SIMH), the Shanghai Psychotherapy and Psychological Counseling Center (SPCC), the Shanghai Municipal Clinical Center for Mental Disease, the National Institution for Clinical Drug Trials, the Shanghai Municipal Center of Mental Disease Prevention and Control (SCMDC), and the Shanghai Drug Abuse Treatment Center (SDATC).

Xuhui campus of The SMHC is located at 600 Wan Ping Nan Road in the Xuhui District of Shanghai. Most of the above divisions operate at this location. The Minhang campus and the SDATC are located at 3210 Hu Min Road in the Minhang District of Shanghai. More than 1,300 full time staff members work in the Center, Approximately 1,000 of these men and women are part of the professional staff that provides care for the patients at the center. Among the professional staff, there are 258 psychiatrists and 541 psychiatric nurses, with 340 of these psychiatric specialists being senior leaders in the field. The staff members at the institution have excellent reputations in China since the center treats some of the most severe, acute and resistant mental illnesses. The diagnoses seen at the SMHC include schizophrenia, affective disorder, organic psychosis, neurodegenerative illnesses, issues typically dealt with in psychotherapy (‘neurosis’), and substance abuse. The SMHC also has 1,878 inpatients beds for the more severe forms of mental illness

Shanghai Institute of Mental Health (SIMH)

The SIMH was established in 1983. It consists of 14 research departments: biochemistry, genetics, neurophysiology, child behavior, traditional Chinese medicine, forensic psychiatry, mental rehabilitation, epidemiology, psychiatric nursing, mental health promotion, and so on. Researches that these departments have conducted has earned the staff at the SIMH numerous academic awards. Between 1995 and 2005, the work that has been done in the areas of geriatric psychiatry and preventive psychiatry has earned particular recognition in the world of Chinese psychiatry. As a guiding philosophy the SIMH follows the biopsychosocial model, taking a holistic approach to mental health. The SIMH aims to gradually develop into the leading psychiatric clinical care and research institution in Shanghai, along with becoming a world renowned mental health research center. To further the international goals of the SIMH, the SMHC is one of the WHO collaborating centers for research and training in mental health. This affiliation has allowed a large number of foreign psychiatrists to collaborate with the center in both training and research.
Shanghai Psychotherapy and Psychological Counseling Center (SPCC)
The SPCC was established in 1992. The SPCC provides psychological counseling and psychotherapy conducted by senior psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, and trained therapists. The Crisis Intervention Hotline of Shanghai, one of the earliest hotlines in both Shanghai and China, is also run by the SPCC. Approximately thirty mental health specialists volunteer their time to staff the hotline. This hotline offers both instant psychological support and crisis intervention for those men and women who reach out to the hotline for aid.
The SMHC also has affiliations with the highly regarded Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (formerly Shanghai Second Medical University), the teaching hospital of the Fudan University School of Medical (formerly Shanghai Medical University), and the Tongji University School of Medical (formerly Shanghai Railway Medical College). These hospitals provide both psychiatric medical education and postgraduate training. In addition, the Center has been entrusted by the Ministry of Health to offer regular continuing education and research training courses for senior psychiatrists and nurses. The trainees for these classes come from all over China.
The SMHC has been honored to receive the title of ‘Model Unit’ multiple times since 1981 by the Shanghai Municipal Government Ministry of Health and the Shanghai Public Health Bureau.
