Drug Abuse Treatment Centre

The Shanghai Drug Abuse Treatment Center (SDATC) is the only government- sponsored public facility which treats substance related disorders. The SDATC was established in 1997 with the approval of the Shanghai Narcotic Control Commission and the Shanghai Public Health bureau.  

SDATC is located at the branch hospital of the Shanghai Mental Health Center (SMHC) located at 3210 Humin Road,Minhang District,Shanghai.

Target Populations for Drug and Alcohol Treatment :

SDATC offers services for patients with alcohol and drug addiction from China and other countries. The number of patients abusing drug is increasing every year. The number of illegal drug users registered in the public security system in Shanghai was52,000 in2010. The most abused drugs are heroine, amphetamine, ketamine, marijuana and esctacy. Currently, the SDATC cares for approximately200 inpatients and 1500 outpatients per year at. Additionally, the center has counseled and treated over 100,000 patients through its hotline and website..

The Mission of the SDATC:

The SDATC works to:

Develop and implement new approaches for treating substance abuse disorders

Teach and train various students and professionals regarding substance abuse disorders. The SDATC brings its knowledge to university and postgraduate students, residents, physicians working at other facilities, social workers, policemen, and trainees seeking continuing education.

Advance the empirical understanding of substance abuse and support efforts to ameliorate substance abuse related problems, such as HIV risk behaviors among IDUs;

Facilitate and gain support for government related activities, such as funding of rehabilitation programs in compulsory environments, policy-making, and supervision of the SDATC’s operations Investigate the neurobiology, genetics and methods of prevention regarding substance abuse disorders

There are 24 full-time staff members at the SDATC, including 6 psychiatrists, 8 nurses and 10 guards. In addition, the center shares a distinguished professional team with other departments at SMHC. The Center includes one inpatient treatment ward with 20 beds, two outpatient clinics, a 24-hour hotline and a website. The inpatient department keeps patients isolated from the outside world and offers a drug free environment so that patients may begin to recover from their illness. The SDATC provides facilities such as psychological rehabilitation rooms, a reception center, a secure examination room, visiting rooms and outdoor activity spaces. The center shares its laboratory,, classrooms, conference centers, research facilities and other ancillary facilities with other departments at the SMHC.

SDATC has established comprehensive ties with domestic and international institutions to futher the treatment of substance abuse disorders. Partners include the National Institute of Drug Dependence (NIDA), The UCLA School of Medicine and University of Miami School of Medicine. With the support of the Shanghai Government and Shanghai Narcotic Control Commission, the center has developed a good relationship with the Shanghai Public Security and Justice System and the Shanghai Ziqiang Social Worker Agency. SDATC was selected as the UNODC International Rehabilitation and Resource centers in 2005. The SDATC has also published over 100 publications in national or international journals and books.
