Adult psychiatry

Adult psychiatry department is the Shanghai Mental Health Center’s largest clinical department, consisting of 20 wards (9 wards on the main campus and 11 wards at the branch hospital), each ward having room for 70 patients. The department has a wide range of clinical specialties; patients with, psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia,, mood disorders, neurosis spectrum disorders, and personality disorders all receive care from the staff of the adult psychiatry department.. Patients come from all around the country, with the largest percentage coming from Shanghai and Eastern China.

The Shanghai Mental Health Center Adult Department of Psychiatry is a nationally known and famous center for mental health care. The department staff includes a team of the field’s most accomplished and recognized psychiatric practitioners. These specialists include Shenxun Shi, Zheng Lu, Biao Wang, Jianhua Sheng, Meijuan Chen, Liping Zhu, Yan Liu, Bin Long, Suoyu Zhu, Yan Wu, Dengtang Liu and Hui Zhou. In addition to the clinical expertise of the faculty, cutting edge research is also conducted by the Adult Department of Psychiatry. The Adult Department of Psychiatry has specific special programs, such as an for emergency psychiatric unit, along with a specific unit dedicated to caring for those patients with early and emerging psychosis The Emergency Care Ward provides care for emergent mental illness and crisis situations as well as mental disorders due to general medical conditions. The Early psychosis ward was established to better detect, diagnose, and prevent the emergence of full clinical schizophrenia. This unit also utilizes psychotherapy for schizophrenia while attempting to treat schizophrenia through its entire course. The department also integrates its clinical care with cutting edge scientific research. This research includes:

        The etiology and pathology of schizophrenia

        Early detection and diagnosis of schizophrenia

        Management of schizophrenia through its entire course

        Clinical trials of new schizophrenia treatments

        Examinations of the cognitive deficits and functional outcomes which occur in schizophrenia
