Release Date:2014-06-13

The Department of Biochemistry & Psychopharmacology, founded in 1959, mainly engaged in mental disorder and metabolism-related research in its early years. Currently, the focus of the department is on furthering the knowledge regarding the biochemistry, molecular biology and pharmacologic treatment of various mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, depression, and anxiety, among other disorders. At present, the Department has become one of the integral pieces of the Shanghai Mental Health Center’s research. The department, for instance, established a method for detecting antipsychotic drug poisoning and antipsychotic plasma concentrations. With professional staff and advanced laboratory equipment, the Department of Biochemistry and Psychopharmacology can provide physicians, researchers, and medical students with comprehensive services such as Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM), Pharmacokinetics Detection (PD), Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR), and many other services.
There are 9 full-time professional staff in the department’s laboratory, including 1 PI, 5 researchers and 3 technicians. The current director of the Department is Professor Chunbo Li, M.D. Dr. Li, holds other titles, such as chief physician, doctoral supervisor, and director of the Department of Biological Psychiatry,. He has led three Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) projects, along with numerous other projects. Dr. Li also participates in important basic research projects such as the 973 project, 863 projects and various international collaborative projects. Dr. Li has published over 180 articles, with 17 articles being SCI indexed.

The department and its laboratory also undertakes to teach doctoral candidates, masters candidates and advanced students from ShanghaiJiaoTongUniversity,FudanUniversityandTongjiUniversity. Dozens graduates have obtained master or doctorate degrees while working in the department’s laboratory, and dozens of researchers or clinicians are currently pursuing their masters or PhD degrees currently.. The lab also offers technical consultation and services to the other labs, hospitals and companies all around China. In particular, we have close relationship with a variety of international academic institutes. The department currently collaborates with the University of Nottingham, The University of Ottawa, The Technical University of Munich, and Harvard University.
